One day Anand asked Buddha, Gurudev, my mind is always lost in the events of the past or immersed in the worries of the future. I am unable to live in the present. Please tell me the solution to overcome this problem.

Lesson 1: Focus on Your Breath to Stay in the Present

Focus on your breath. Buddha said to Anand.

The first rule is to focus on your breathing. Breath is the most obvious and immediate experience of life. Whenever your mind wanders, feel your breathing. When you focus on your breathing, your mind will immediately return to the present.

Anand tried it. Gradually he understood that inhaling and exhaling was a simple but profound experience that anchored the mind in the present.

Lesson 2: Let Go of the Past to Live in the Present

Let go of the past. The second rule was to let go of the past.

You have no power to rewrite what has already occurred. The more you delve into the past, the more your mental peace will be disturbed. So let go of the past and don’t let it dominate your present.

Anand asked Buddha, Gurudev, shouldn’t we learn from our past experiences?

Buddha replied, “Sure, learn from the past, but don’t carry it as a burden in your present.” What has happened is past, it is wise to let it go.

Lesson 3: Don’t Worry About the Future – Live in the Present

Don’t worry about the future. The third rule was, “Don’t worry about the future. The future is uncertain, and worrying about it is useless.” When you worry about the future your mind becomes unstable. So don’t worry about the future but focus on your present.

Anand felt relieved to hear this because he was often worried about the uncertainties of the future. Buddha taught him that the path to true peace is to live in the present and stop worrying about the future.

Lesson 4: Practice Meditation to Master Living in the Present

Practice meditation. The Buddha taught Ananda the fourth precept.

Practice meditation regularly. Through meditation the mind becomes calm and stays in the present. Through meditation you will understand that the present is the true experience of life. Meditation will free you from the worries of the past and future.

Anand incorporated meditation into his daily routine and gradually he felt his mind become more stable and calm.

Ananda asked the Buddha. But Gurudev, what if the experience is painful?

Buddha answered. Painful experiences are also a part of life. Rejecting them only increases the suffering. By accepting them you will be able to bear the pain peacefully.

Lesson 6: Keep Your Mind Alert to Continue Living in the Present

Keep your mind alert. There was a sixth rule. Keep your mind alert.

The mind is like a child that has a habit of wandering. By being fully present with your mind, you will recognise when it wanders and what triggers it. By keeping your mind alert you will be able to prevent it from wandering.

Anand followed this rule and he realized that through awareness he was gaining control over his thoughts and emotions.

Lesson 7: Be in Harmony with Nature While Living in the Present

Be in harmony with nature. The seventh rule is to be in harmony with nature.

Everything in life has its time and place. Just as day and night come and go, changes also occur in our lives. Accept them and live in harmony with nature.

Buddha explained to Ananda that the events of life are also part of natural change. When we accept these things as natural, then peace comes into life.

Lesson 8: Express Gratitude to Enhance Living in the Present

Express gratitude. The eighth rule was to express gratitude.

Be grateful for everything you have in life. When you are grateful, your mind becomes free from negativity and you start enjoying every moment of the present.

Anand felt that expressing gratitude made his mind calm and satisfied. He started expressing gratitude for every small and big thing.

Lesson 9: Accept Death as a Reminder of Living in the Present

Accept death. The ninth rule is to accept death.

Death is the inevitable truth of life. When you accept death you are inspired to live every moment of life. Knowing the inevitability of death will allow you to live the present more deeply.

Anand was deeply shocked to hear this. But Buddha explained to him that accepting death increases the importance of every little joy in life.

Lesson 10: Seek Liberation Through Living in the Present

Seek liberation. The first and final rule is to seek liberation.
